Pianist, composer, and bandleader Orrin Evans has followed a vigorously individual path through more than 25 albums as a leader and co–leader. This gala six–night run, with two outstanding bands, will be Evans’ final performances before he begins an exciting new career phase as a member of GRAMMY award-winning trio The Bad Plus. “Every so often, there’s a jazz concert that represents everything a great concert can and should be,” wrote Michael J. West in The Washington Post. “That is, it’s diverse, adventurous, polished and engaging; it has as much invention in its workings of the warhorse standards as in its presentation of new compositions. This was the concert that pianist Orrin Evans put on Friday night at Bohemian Caverns.” To conclude his Jazz Standard engagement, Evans will lead an all–star sextet including Ingrid Jensen, one of the finest trumpeters of her generation; and saxophonist JD Allen, hailed by The New York Times for his “enigmatic, elegant and hard–driving style.” “We’re taught that with knowledge comes power.
