Protecting marine life and its habitat is the American Littoral Society’s starting point and most fundamental mission. Since 1961 we have empowered people to care for the coast through advocacy, conservation, and education. We not only provide a voice for the coast, but also give concerned citizens the knowledge and tools they need to raise their voices with us.
The American Littoral Society’s Operation Oyster program aims to improve water quality in New Jersey's bays and estuaries, as well as improve coastal resiliency through re-establishing natural oyster reefs. Oysters help keep water clean and oyster reefs help protect the coastline. They are nature's water filters, each one is able to clean up to 50 gallons of water a day. Oyster reefs also serve as speed bumps for waves during storms. Over-harvesting and decades of pollution, accelerated by rampant development, have decimated New Jersey's natural oyster population.
The American Littoral Society is hosting Oh, Oysters! to raise funds for coastal conservation and bring awareness to the plight of the once prolific Eastern Oyster. The event will include a reception (beer, wine, soft drinks, heavy hors d'oeuvres and a raw bar) prior to the screening, the 90-minute film, and a panel discussion with the featured farmers, Society staff, and other experts after the film.
