mildred – a band from Oakland, CA of four equal parts: four singers, four songwriters – recently released their debut EP mild which received support from The Guardian, The Line of Best Fit, Clash, Still Listening, DIY, The New Cue, Uncut and more. Today they follow up with mild’s twin EP red which will be released on 5 December via Memorials of Distinction / Dog Day Records. They have also announced that the two EPs will be released as a physical CD and cassette which will also be released on 5 December. Along with the announcement they have shared the video for lead single ‘Sauvie’s Nude Beach’.
Speaking of the track mildred say:
“This is a song about a youthful summer in Portland, OR. Sauvie’s nude beach is a beach, Holman’s is a pub, and My Fathers Place is a bar”
The release of mildred’s twin debut EPs comes off the back of their debut UK tour this summer which included shows in London at the Shacklewell Arms and The Windmill as well as in Bristol at The Louisiana, this followed support tours in the US with Porridge Radio and Naima Bock and they are currently playing a series of Bay area shows in October/November, remaining show below. They have also today announced a full US tour with Naima Bock in February 2026.
mildred were first friends, then roommates, then a band. Their songs are the result of living room sessions before and after dinner. The border between the living/practice room and kitchen was open and porous. The songs from these sessions later fell into two drawers. The first drawer, marked mild contains songs a little softer around the edges. The contents of the red drawer are a little more angular.
Henry: Sings, writes songs. Plays guitar. Grew up in Portland, Oregon, playing a lot of basketball. Baby’s first band.
Matt: Sings, writes songs. Bass, winds, the occasional ripping guitar solo (when they need a heavy hitter on a track). Architect, carpenter. Spent his childhood in Colombia, his teens in northern Minnesota, and a year in a Benedictine monastery.
Jack: Sings, writes songs. Plays guitar. Physics grad student from Portland, OR. Spends his days underground studying the titanium atom beyond any conceivable point. Plays tennis.
Will: Sings, writes songs. Plays the drums. Engineered/mixed the EPs. From London but has been living in the States for 6 years. Environmental lawyer. A crossword savant.
Jack and Henry grew up in Portland, Oregon at rival schools. Henry and Will met in their mid-20s and discovered they were third cousins (their grannies were best friends). Matt met Henry many years back after spending summers on the same farm in Southern Oregon. The songs were recorded over the course of a couple weekends in the living room, Will and Jack had amassed enough janky microphones and working knowledge of the recording process to duct tape their way through a recording session.
mildred: a freckled, chain-smoking lunchlady with a beautiful tenor.
