Ms. Ezra Furman: Doing What She Wants - A “solo” show welcomed by CHIRP Radio w. Joelton Mayfield

  • Ezra Furman

    Pop

Ezra Furman is a boundary-breaking artist whose fearless creativity and emotional honesty have made her one of the most compelling voices in modern music. Blending punk energy, heartfelt lyricism and genre-defying innovation, Furman’s work is both deeply personal and universally resonant. This year saw the release of her 10th album Goodbye Small Head.

“If I were a music journalist, I would call this an orchestral emo prog-rock record sprinkled with samples. Thank goodness I’m not a music journalist!” explains Ezra. “I think of this music as cinematic and intense. A friend of mine said it sounded like “the coolest movie soundtrack of 1997,” and I’m quite pleased with that description. We’ve incorporated a small string section into eight of the twelve tracks, and are using samples for the first time. Other than that, this record features something that’s become nearly an anachronism: a band that’s been playing real instruments together for over a decade, intuitively in touch with each other as musicians. Four players in a room together who know exactly how to respond to one another.”

Over the course of her illustrious career, she also recorded the soundtrack for the Netflix smash hit TV series Sex Education and authored Lou Reed: Transformer for the 33 ⅓ series. Ezra Furman’s music is a testament to the power of individuality and authenticity, marking her as a truly unique voice in modern music.

  • Joelton Mayfield

    Alternative Country

Joelton Mayfield has toured with and/or opened shows for Briston Maroney, Caroline Kingsbury, Katy Kirby, Annie DiRusso, Peaer, Boyscott, Free Range, Secondhand Sound, Parker Gispert (The Whigs), Lou Turner, Leggy, Future Crib, Human People, Dream Wave, Bendrix Littleton (Hovvdy), Blaketheman1000, and many others.

Bio: Raised in small town central Texas and based in Nashville, Tennessee, Joelton Mayfield crafts hard-hitting alt-country that’s at home in dive bars and DIY venues alike. Mayfield’s distinct take on the genre blends Wilco-esque musicality with the dynamics and melodic edge of fourth-wave emo to create a sound all his own. This musical innovation underscores Mayfield’s deft lyricism, which draws a Southern Gothic literary sensibility and deals intimately with the tensions embedded in family, religion, masculinity, and love in the American South.

Songs from I Hope You Make It (2019 EP) have been on Nashville’s Lightning 100.1 FM, Memphis’s Ditty TV, Macon’s The Creek FM, and Central Texas’s KBEY FM. In print, Mayfield has been featured in The Nashville Scene, Sound & Soul of Central Georgia, as well as The Picayune, The Highlander, and The Daily Tribune in Central Texas. In terms of big stages, Joelton has played SXSW official showcases in 2017 and 2019, headlined a Saturday night at Luckenbach, Texas, played the main stage at Old Settler’s Music Festival (headlined that year by Dawes, Hayes Carll, Deer Tick, Jay Farrar, and Bob Schnieder), played the main stage at Burnet Bluebonnet Festival (headlined that year by Wade Bowen), and will be playing Kerrville Folk Festival and Bragg Jam in Macon, GA this year.
