North State Grass
High Energy Progressive Bluegrass
North State Grass, from Charlotte, NC, is a progressive bluegrass quartet that will move your feet, touch your heart, and spin your head. Formed in November 2025 and inspired by the drive of Jimmy Martin and the Tony Rice Unit, with the modern edge of Sierra Hull and Billy Strings, North State Grass delivers lightning-fast picking, tight harmonies, earworm originals, and a sound that bridges tradition with modern flair.
Composed of Steven Davidson (mandolin), Cooper Eades (guitar), Angel Chantel (bass), and Levi Austin (banjo), the band draws from a wide range of influences including country, rock, funk, metal, and jam music, while staying firmly rooted in bluegrass. The result is a sound that keeps audiences moving, engaged, and guessing what’s coming next.
North State Grass has shared the stage with legendary flatpicker and longtime Doc Watson guitarist Jack Lawrence, including an annual celebration of Doc Watson’s birthday that is now entering its fourth year. The band has also performed alongside acclaimed artists such as Peter Rowan, Christopher Henry, Graham Sharp, and Kyle Tuttle, further establishing its place within the bluegrass community.
In 2026, North State Grass made its debut at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, earning third place in the Telluride Bluegrass Band Competition and marking an important milestone in the band’s rapidly growing presence in the festival scene. The group continues to tour throughout the Southeast, bringing its high-energy blend of traditional bluegrass, progressive picking, and improvisational exploration to venues and festivals across the region.
With their debut album, Pathago, released in June, North State Grass is carving out its own corner of the bluegrass world. The album’s first single, “Toad,” was nominated for a Josie Award, adding to the band’s growing recognition. From front-porch harmonies and hard-driving picking, to wide-open spacey jams, the band’s music is rooted in Appalachia while looking firmly toward the future.
Keep an eye out for North State Grass wherever good folks gather. Whether you’re a lifelong bluegrass aficionado or a curious newcomer, their music will sweep you off your feet and into the heart of Appalachia.
