Since the release of their critically acclaimed 'Voyager' album, Moonchild have toured the album across the world, with headline tours in North America, Asia and Europe as well as opening for The Internet and Kamasi Washington. Whilst travelling, the band wasted no time working on 'Little Ghost' as they started putting together beats and production ideas on the road. 'Little Ghost' is undoubtedly a continuation of the Moonchild story as the trio work together to achieve the sound they feel represents the band. This fondness for experimentation and teamwork follows across the release, particularly through the instrumentation with band members coming together to form harmonies and horn solos.

Moonchild is a combination of three independent strong-willed spirits, Amber Navran [vocals, tenor saxophone, flute, keyboards, synth bass, drum programming], Andris Mattson [trumpet, flugelhorn, keyboards, synth bass, guitar, drum programming], and Max Bryk [alto saxophone, clarinet, keyboards, synth bass, drum programming].

With a unique style of alternative R&B, soul and new-school jazz that has cemented their spot in today's music scene, Moonchild continue to intertwine lyrical concepts with expansive glistening melodies, harmonies and irresistible interludes. Taking its name from the most emotional of celestial bodies (in the eyes of the band), 'Little Ghost' follows the widely-praised 'Voyager', 'Please Rewind' and 'Be Free' which were shown love by DJs like Gilles Peterson, Don Letts and Huey Morgan (BBC 6Music) to Jamie Cullum (BBC Radio 2), Jamz Supernova (BBC 1XTRA) and Anthony Valadez (KCRW) alongside Jazz FM who named the band Soul Act Of The Year 2018. The releases garnered press and online praise from The Fader, Echoes Magazine, Saint Heron, Kick Mag, KCRW and Okayplayer, with 'Voyager' racking up 45 million streams on Spotify whilst the video for single "The List" has gained 7+ million views on YouTube.

Moonchild have collaborated and toured with highly-respected names from across music including Kamasi Washington, Stevie Wonder, The Internet, Jill Scott, been compared to the likes of Tom Misch and Jordan Rakei and built up a host of iconic supporters from Robert Glasper (who collaborated with Navran on his latest release with R+R=Now) and Laura Mvula to James Poyser, Jazzy Jeff, 9th Wonder and Tyler, The Creator.

    Moonchild

    Contemporary R&B

Alternative R&B trio Moonchild are known for their spaced-out, Soulquarians-inspired grooves and the wispy, at-ease vocals of Amber Navran. The band's lineup consists of Navran (also a clarinetist and saxophonist) with fellow multi-instrumentalists Max Bryk (keyboards, saxophone, clarinet) and Andris Mattson (keyboards, trumpet, flügelhorn). The Los Angeles-based trio met at the University of Southern California and debuted the year of their formation with the self-released Be Free (2012).

Moonchild subsequently joined the roster of the independent U.K. label Tru Thoughts, where they continued to refine their sound with Please Rewind(2015) and Voyager (2017), the latter of which added harp and other stringed instrumentation to their blissed-out compositions. They've opened for the likes of Stevie Wonder and Georgia Anne Muldrowand, true to their genre-crossing appeal, have been featured together on recordings headlined by Detroit musician Brandon Williams ("Leave Love Be") and hip-hop producer Tall Black Guy ("I Will Never Know"). Their output has been sampled, as heard on Mac Miller's "Two Matches." Outside Moonchild, Navran, Bryk, and Mattson have worked as both solo artists and collaborators.

    Electro-Jazz

On 5 April, LA-based jazz pianist and beat maker, Kiefer, will release Bridges, the follow-up to his first Stones Throw release Happysad (2018) and debut LP Kickinit Alone (Leaving Records, 2017).

Kiefer’s soulful beat music has won fans at Pitchfork, Bandcamp and the BBC, as well as hip-hop stars Dr Dre and Anderson .Paak. Last summer, Kiefer toured the US, Asia, Europe and co-produced “Smile / Petty” from .Paak’s acclaimed album 'Oxnard." A fixture in Mndsgn's live setup, Kiefer has also made beats with Kaytranada, and played with Terrace Martin, Moses Sumney, among others.

Kiefer is a keyboardist first and foremost, taught to play the blues by his father practically before he could walk. He started producing his own beats at around age twelve, and eventually went on to study under renowned jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell at UCLA’s Jazz Studies program. There, he started to toy with the synergy between the jazz piano he studied and the beats he created outside of school. While his peers performed over live instrumentation, Kiefer produced electronic beats completely free from sampled melodic material or drum breaks.

While Bridges remains true to his jazz and hip-hop roots, the release between full-lengths was an opportunity to take his sound in new directions. “My dad always told me any time you work on something, make it better than last time,” he says, “I want to approach things in a new and updated way.”

No longer driven solely by Kiefer’s signature piano, several songs on Bridges incorporate new instruments, including a range of analogue synths. They also display a renewed emphasis on arrangements. Steering away from the improvisatory, beat-tape styles of songs on Kickinit Alone and Happysad, Kiefer focused on a structured approach to composition and more intricately orchestrated moments, giving the title its second meaning — the musical bridge.

Kiefer will take this new material on the road throughout 2019 backed by a team of A-list jazz musicians including Jonah Levine (trombone, keys), Sam Gendel (alto), Andy McCauley (bass), and Will Logan (drums). The dates include a US leg in April followed by Kiefer's first solo European headlining tour in May.

Put simply, Kiefer hopes his music and live shows can help inspire joy. “It’s comforting to see someone who is truly dedicated to making beautiful stuff,” he says, “I want people to see someone genuinely pour their heart into something.
