Description
Our long–running “Mingus Monday” residency continues this month with the eclectic Mingus Orchestra playing some of the most intriguing and far–reaching compositions of the legendary Charles Mingus (1922–1979). “Mingus’s audiences never knew quite what they were going to get, and this kept them coming…His music, which drew omnivorously on the blues, gospel, Dixieland, Duke Ellington, bebop, and classical music, among much else, was similarly unpredictable. It blurred the boundaries between improvisation and composition, often ignoring standard form, and was famous for its rapid shifts in mood and tempo.” – Christopher Carroll, “Mingus: The Chaos and the Magic,” The New York Review of Books (2.12.2013

Music
In two expansive and eclectic sets, the Mingus Orchestra – with its distinctive blend of “jazz” and “non–jazz” instrumentation – will perform compositions by Charles Mingus that reveal the profound influence of classical and serial music on his unique body of work. “In my music, I’m trying to play the truth of what I am. The reason it’s difficult is because I’m changing all the time.” (C.M.).
