Description
A rare appearance by the Mingus Orchestra, with its singular blend of “jazz” and “non–jazz” instruments brought to bear on some of maestro Mingus’ most inventive compositions. Expect the unexpected from this unique aggregation, including such rare jewels as “Noon Night,” “Taurus in the Arena of Life,” and “Half Mast Inhibition.” “The lean, sharp ten–piece band features such uncommon instrumentation as a bassoon and a French horn, but this isn’t staid chamber jazz. When the spirit of the late great one hits them, they steam.” (The New Yorker)

Music
In two expansive and eclectic sets, the Mingus Orchestra – with its distinctive blend of “jazz” and “non–jazz” instrumentation – will perform compositions by Charles Mingus that reveal the profound influence of classical and serial music on his unique body of work. “In my music, I’m trying to play the truth of what I am. The reason it’s difficult is because I’m changing all the time.” (C.M.).
