Description
Miles Davis - John Coltrane Centennial“, J feat. Joe Magnarelli/Jerry Bergonzi/Virginia MacDonald   Trumpeter Miles Davis and saxophonist John Coltrane were outstanding, groundbreaking soloists and bandleaders in jazz history. From 1955 to 1960, Coltrane was a member of the Miles Davis Quintet/Sextet, during which time many classic jazz albums were created, including "Kind of Blue" and "'Round About Midnight." In 1960, they went their separate ways, but achieved further success with their respective bands: Miles Davis in a variety of constellations and styles, and John Coltrane primarily with his own famous quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones, which made groundbreaking recordings like "A Love Supreme." Their compositions are an absolute standard part of the jazz repertoire; titles like "So What" (Miles Davis) and "Giant Steps" (John Coltrane) are well known to every musician and fan. These two jazz icons would have celebrated their 100th birthdays in 2026, reason enough to dedicate a special program to these giants with renowned connoisseurs of this music. Joe Magnarelli from New York has been one of the world's leading trumpeters for three decades. He graduated from SUNY-Fredonia in 1982 and moved to New York in 1986. He initially worked with the Lionel Hampton Big Band from 1987-89 and then with organist Brother Jack McDuff from 1989-94. In 1991, he founded the New York Hard Bop Quintet and subsequently led his own groups with John Swana and Jerry Weldon. He has also played as a sideman with Toshiko Akiyoshi, Laverne Butler, Harry Connick, Jr., the Buddy Rich Band, Maria Schneider, Grant Stewart, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Ray Barretto, and many others. Jerry Bergonzi is a real legend of jazz. He worked with Dave Brubeck and has been leading own groups for more than 40 years. Special guest on this tour is the young Canadian clarinetist Virginia MacDonald, a true rising star of North American jazz. This international sextet is completed by three outstanding accompanists: piano master Jeb Patton is mostly known for his work with the Heath brothers, and John Lockwood on bass is a real Boston legend. Austrian drummer Bernd Reiter, winner of the Hans Koller Prize in 2006 and now living part-time in New York, has played with many great jazz musicians, including Don Menza, Charles Davis, Harold Mabern, Cyrus Chestnut, Kirk Lightsey, Mundell Lowe, Steve Grossman, Claudio Roditi, and many more. This outstanding lineup, featuring musicians from the USA, Canada, and Austria, is a true all-star selection and guarantees a top-class concert evening under the motto "Swinging Jazz at its Best"!   Joe Magnarelli (US) - trumpet (www.joemagnarelli.com) Jerry Bergonzi (US) - tenorsax Virginia MacDonald (CA) - clarinet (www.virginiamacdonald.ca) Jeb Patton (US) - piano (www.jebpatton.com) John Lockwood (US) - bass Bernd Reiter (AT) - drums (www.berndreiter.at)
