Description
“At a time when orchestral jazz is either ultra-polished, exceedingly highbrow, or a pedestrian pandering to sentimental tastes of yore, Miho Hazama’s boldly organic and singularly exciting collective is a breath of fresh air,” wrote Hrayr Attarian in an All About Jazz review of the 2015 album Time River. “Her uncanny ability to remain intellectually stimulating and vibrantly spirited is what makes her work singularly innovative.” This week, the prodigiously gifted young composer/conductor and her thrilling ensemble m_unit return to Jazz Standard on the heels of Hazama’s first GRAMMY Award nomination, for Dancer In Nowhere (Sunnyside) as Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. Lauded in DownBeat as one of “25 For The Future,” Miho Hazama has written for and expertly showcased the abilities of guest artists such as Joshua Redman, Lionel Loueke, Stefon Harris, and Gil Goldstein, to name a few. Originally from Japan, New York-based jazz composer Miho Hazama is a brilliant, award-winning bandleader, who just five years ago arrived in New York City and has since begun to establish herself as a force to be reckoned with. A winner of the 16th Annual Charlie Parker Jazz Composition Prize, Hazama's jazz chamber orchestra "m_unit" draws on myriad musical sources, arriving at a highly distinctive and original sound. In his DownBeat four–star review of Hazama’s debut album Journey To Journey (2013), James Hale wrote: “Hazama includes a string quartet as a core element of her ensemble, and constantly juxtaposes horn lines against thorny string harmonies and stuttering tempos. When she does resort to them, standard big band techniques – like the dramatic staccato build at the end of ‘What Will You See When You Turn The Next Corner?’ – sound fresh.” With her second Sunnyside Records release, Time River, Hazama further makes her case as an important emerging voice in the large ensemble arena.
