Description
“This young musician and composer is at once reestablishing the artistic, cultural, and social tradition of jazz while creating an entirely new jazz language for the 21st century.” So said the MacArthur Foundation in presenting a 2008 “genius grant” to Miguel Zenón – one of a select group of musicians who have masterfully balanced and blended the often contradictory poles of innovation and tradition. One  of the most groundbreaking and influential saxophonists of his generation, the San Juan–born Zenón has developed a unique voice as a composer and conceptualist, focused on perfecting his singular blend of Latin American folkloric music and jazz. In 2011, Miguel Zenón founded Caravana Cultural, a program which presents free jazz concerts in rural areas of Puerto Rico, including performances by local student musicians. This much anticipated Jazz Standard run will celebrate the release of Sonero: The Music of Ismael Rivera, an album which explores the music of the legendary Puerto Rican Salsa icon, all through the prism of the saxophonist’s working quartet. Miguel Zenón – alto saxophone Luis Perdomo – piano  Hans Glawischnig – bass Henry Cole – drums
