Description
Only a year after graduating from Berklee in 2009, Chilean–born saxophonist Melissa Aldana released her debut album, Free Fall, via Greg Osby's Inner Circle Music. In 2013, she became was the first female musician and the first South American musician to win the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition; reporting on her win, the Washington Post described Aldana as representing “a new sense of possibility and direction in jazz.” With her Crash Trio (featuring Cuban drummer Francisco Mela and Chilean bassist Pablo Menares), Aldana released a 2014 album on Concord Jazz. The follow–up CD, Back Home(Word of Mouth Music, 2016), was hailed by Nate Chinen in The New York Times as the saxophonist’s “fourth and finest album…a supremely focused statement that makes no attempt to blur its lineage and yet feels largely unburdened by legacy.” This much–anticipated Jazz Standard appearance heralds the release of Melissa Aldana’s forthcoming album, her first for Motema Music.
