Description
In the decade since her 2009 graduation from Berklee, the career of Melissa Aldana has gone from strength to strength. In 2010, she released her debut album, Free Fall, released on Greg Osby's Inner Circle Music; in 2013, at age 24, she was the first female musician and the first South American musician to win the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition. Reporting her win, the Washington Post described the tenor saxophonist as representing “a new sense of possibility and direction in jazz.” Now her 2019 CD, Visions, represents a major fulfillment of that possibility. As jazz journalist Nate Chinen wrote for WBGO: “Melissa Aldana…has the elusive ability to balance technical achievement against a rich emotional palette. Visions, her finest album, was inspired by the inner life of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo; it's a brilliant showcase for a band that includes this year's breakout star, Joel Ross, on vibraphone.” Don’t miss this special appearance by this rising star, who was just nominated for the 2019 GRAMMY Awards for Best Improvised Jazz Solo – for one night only, and only at Jazz Standard! Melissa Aldana – tenor saxophone Shai Maestro – piano  Pablo Menares – bass Kush Abadey – drums
