Jazz Standard welcomes the acclaimed guitarist and composer Mary Halvorson in her first appearance on our stage as a leader. Her new album Code Girl grew out of a challenge to write and arrange vocal pieces for an ensemble. Halvorson was well–suited to this task, having created song–oriented projects in duo with violist Jessica Pavone and in duo/trio with drummer Kevin Shea and bassist Kyle Forester (under the straightforward moniker People). For Code Girl, the guitarist expanded the celebrated trio Thumbscrew (with drummer Tomas Fujiwara and bassist Michael Formanek) into a quintet, adding trum-peter Ambrose Akinmusire and vocalist Amirtha Kidambi.
