Marty O’Reilly is a vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter who most often performs alongside his band “The Old Soul Orchestra”- a group that takes great joy in exploring new interpretations of old styles of music. However, this endeavor makes the common inquiry as to what kind of music they play a loaded question. It’s folky but not folk music, bluesy but not blues music, soulful but not soul. As a solo performer, the same collection of songs (his originals, and a handful of renditions) becomes more straightforward: he plays folk and blues music...it’s soulful but not soul. Some of the influences become more obvious at a solo performance. You can hear a musician that has worshipped Leo Keottke, Mississippi John Hurt, Tom Waits and countless others, and who has hoped to learn something valuable from each of them.
