Thomas Conrad in Jazz Times (9.22.2015): “Recent generations of drummers have reshaped the role of percussion in the small jazz ensemble…these drummers share scary chops, outright aggression and musicianship that keep them (just barely) from overwhelming their bands. The most erudite among them improvise trap–set scores for Oscar–winning films (Antonio Sanchez, for Birdman) or become significant bandleaders and label founders.” With the 2015 release of debut album Family First, drummer Mark Guiliana announced his arrival among this percussive elite. Beyond the standard instrumentation of an acoustic jazz quartet, wrote Conrad, “nothing else about it is standard. Guiliana sounds like Tony Williams filtered through Dave Grohl. His band plays advanced postmodern freebop with a garage/grunge sense of license... Guiliana the composer creates complete, detailed, wildly diverse conceptions.” With his second release Jersey (Motema), Mark Guiliana applies what he’s gained since his debut recording: experience recording David Bowie’s GRAMMY award-winning Blackstar, time in the Brad Mehldau collaborative duo Mehliana, and his ever-growing command of various musical styles and perspectives. In the firmament of contemporary music, Mark Guiliana is a true rising star – catch him now, live and direct at Jazz Standard!
