Ol Whitetail is a singer-songwriter who grew up in rural northern Appalachia and lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She employs literary devices and elements of visual design to create cinematic folk songs with hints of country blues, ragtime, and jazz. Her lyrics are inspired by philosophy, magic realism, activism, and nature. Her guitar and banjo playing is a variation on the Piedmont blues, inspired by Etta Baker.
Ol Whitetail recorded her debut self-titled album at The Church Recording Studio (Pittsburgh, PA). She has brought her busker-style performance and storytelling to the streets (busking and protests) and stages in the United States and Canada, and recently opened for The Violent Femmes. She's appeared on Thacker Mountain Radio, Blue Plate Special, Vinyl Lunch, and Wheeling Jamboree. She recorded two albums with a folk-country duo Good Luck Ola and interned at Oh Boy Records in Nashville. She also served on the board for the Helen Creighton Folklore Society in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she began to play folk and jazz on a classical guitar.
In addition to performance and studio work, Ol Whitetail has designed educational and community programs "Outside The Mines: Songs of Coal Folk" and "Welcome Newcomers: Song Circle for English Language Learners".
