Description
Multi-awarded French jazz vocalist Marina Pacowski is excited to bring her all-star band to Catalina Jazz Club! Expect a tour through the Great American Songbook and the land of bebop, along with some fresh new material from her latest CD “New Jazz Standards, Volume Seven: The Music of Carl Saunders”. Scott Yanow of “LA Jazz Scene” says, “Marina Pacowski proves to be an outstanding jazz singer…she never coasts or sings the predictable.” Joe Lang of “Jersey Jazz” says, “It is kind of rare when you hear a vocalist who can truly fit into the category of jazz singer. Such a singer is Marina Pacowski. Pacowski has a vocal quality when singing lyrics that is a blend of Blossom Dearie and Billie Holiday.” Leonid Auskern of “Jazz Quad” says, “Pacowski demonstrates the extraordinary skill of scat vocals in the tradition of great jazz divas like Ella and Sarah…she also sings the lyrics, swinging beautifully and effectively, emphasizing the emotional message on each track.” Nick Mondello of “Bebop Spoken Here” says Marina is “an outstanding vocalist with a truly hip and deeply swinging approach. She’s perky, got flair and uber-style. Her time, pitch sense, and diction are all dead on.”
Marina Pacowski is originally from Biarritz, France, and is now based in Los Angeles. She is a multi-faceted artist: a multi-awarded jazz vocalist and concert pianist, and a highly sought-after award-winning collaborative pianist, recording artist, and educator. She has performed at LA jazz hotspots The Jazz Bakery, Catalina Jazz Club, Herb Alpert’s Vibrato Jazz Grill, and The Lighthouse, and in 2021 received a Jazz Excellence Award at Feinstein’s at Vitello’s, in a ceremony hosted by Rhonda Hamilton of KKJZ.
Her debut CD on Summit Records (“Inner Urge”) features Roy McCurdy, John Clayton, Josh Nelson, Jon Mayer, Peter Erskine, Larry Koonse, Carl Saunders, Nolan Shaheed, Bevan Manson, Mark Massey, Mike Gurrola, and Scott Whitfield. Her second CD (“New Jazz Standards, Volume Seven: The Music of Carl Saunders”) also features McCurdy, Clayton, Nelson, Koonse, and Whitfield, along with Ken Wild, Rickey Woodard, and Ron Stout, with special guest appearances by John Proulx and Ken Peplowski.
As a pianist, Marina has toured internationally, performing extensively throughout Europe and the United States, and has given masterclasses at many major universities including the Eastman School of Music. Composers have written virtuosic pieces for her, including American composer Frank Proto having written a concerto for her, which she recorded in Cincinnati with members of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

The American dream came true for Catalina Popescu in October of 1986 when she and her husband Bob created a supper club devoted to serving an experience of superb eats and the shared magic of live performance. That grand experience began at the door where every night her mother Maria would greet each guest as family and share in their love of music. Housed in Hollywood and decked out in a timeless charm, the club offers a cozy ambience under sparkling stage lights garnished with its signature concoction — Jazz. The first artist to grace the stage was the masterful flutist and saxophonist Buddy Collette, and ever since then, over the past 36 years, the Catalina Jazz Club has hosted the most illustrious legends of all time — from the powerful puffers of Dizzy Gillespie to the electrified fingers of McCoy Tyner, the bubbly belt of Dee Dee Bridgewater and Lynda Carter, the flirtatious saxophone of Joshua Redman, the slick strumming of Kenny Burrell, the insane drum clinic of Steve Gadd, the romance of Steve Tyrell, and the masterclass of Mike Stern.
For Catalina, Jazz is our way of life. It breathes pain. It knows love. It dreams hope. It bleeds courage. Whether we’re showcasing Broadway, Soul, R&B, or stand-up comedy, the lesson learned from all the greats who have serenaded our spirits is how to connect to one another. And that’s why the Catalina Jazz Club will always have a table ready for you.
The Catalina Jazz Club has been honored by A.S.M.A.C., California Jazz Foundation, Los Angeles Jazz Society, and a City of Los Angeles Certificate of Appreciation on their 25th Anniversary, which was awarded by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the LA City Council which included then City Council member and current Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.
