A charter member of the 21st century jazz vanguard, Marcus Strickland apprenticed with the band of drummer Roy Haynes, during which time he released his first two albums as a leader. In 2006, he founded his own label, Strick Muzik, to release the ambitious double CD Twi–Life; and was proclaimed “Best New Artist” in the JazzTimes Readers’ Poll. In 2016, the saxophonist made his Blue Note label debut with Nihil Novi, produced by Meshell Ndegeocello and drawing upon a sonic terrain that ranged from J Dilla’s beat making to Bela Bartók’s Hungarian folk music. Marcus Strickland, wrote Mike Hobart in The Financial Times (4.15.2016), “has been cross–cutting the onward rush of contemporary jazz with the sharp beats of hip–hop for more than a decade.” On his thrilling new LP, People of the Sun (Blue Note/Revive Music), Strickland blazes down that trail fully at the helm of his music—performing, writing, and producing with his outrageously able Twi-Life band on deck—even as he sonically and socially traces the African diaspora from present to past in an effort to unpack his identity. "I'm thinking about where we came from" says Strickland, "and how that clashes and goes hand in hand with what we've created here as Black Americans." The result is an album that's busy and beautiful, inventive and contemplative, an amalgam of influences from West Africa (griot culture, Afrobeat, percussion) and America (post-bop, funk-soul, beat music) performed in the key of revelation. Strickland will celebrate the release of People of the Sun tonight with his working quartet plus special guests Pharoahe Monch and Smithsoneon – only at Jazz Standard!
