Saxophonist Marcus Strickland is a charter member of the 21st century jazz vanguard. Strickland and other artists such as Jeremy Pelt and Robert Glasper breathed new life into jazz early in the new millenium. He worked for several years with legendary drummer Roy Haynes and also has worked with a wide variety of artists, including Christian McBride, Mos Def, and many others.
In 2016 he released Nihil Novi, his debut recording on the world-famous Blue Note label, (with producer Meshell N'Degeocello), featuring his newly-formed band, Twi-Life, with rising star trumpeter Keyon Harrold, drummer Charles Haynes, bassist Kyle Miles and organist Mitch Henry, with guest spots by Robert Glasper, Jean Baylor, others.
"Marcus Strickland is well on his way to becoming one of the finest jazz musicians of his time. His brilliant compositional skills and his unique sound keeps the door open to traditional jazz as an art form. In these definite and trying times for ‘America’s most original art form," finding a platform to speak from becomes increasingly difficult; however, Marcus Strickland’s talent will always find a way to be heard." - jazzreview.com
