Featuring:
Mali Obomsawin - bass, voice | Magdalena Abrego - guitar |

“A breath of fresh air…It not only works as a potent commentary on Indigenous heritage, autonomy and experiences, but as gripping, dynamic, and thunderous music in and of itself. All that without an ounce of overshowing.” JazzTimes

Mali Obomsawin is distinguished and award winning bassist, composer, improviser and citizen of Odanak First Nation (W8banaki). With an expansive background in American roots, jazz, and indie rock, Obomsawin carries several music traditions. Her genre-defying work has led her to perform at premier venues and festivals across the US and Canada as both bandleader and accompanist, and her compositions have been featured in highly acclaimed television (Reservation Dogs, 2023) and documentary (Sugarcane, composer, 2024) in recent years.

Obomsawin will be performing music from her exceptional bandleader composer album debut, "Sweet Tooth", a project that shines a light on the Indigenous history of jazz and expresses the vitality and contemporary nature of Indigenous culture. the album debut garnered international acclaim and was named in ‘best of the year’ lists from The Guardian, NPR, and JazzTimes upon its release. Evocative and thunderous, “Sweet Tooth” delivers a gripping and dynamic performance, seamlessly melding chorale-like spirituals, folk melodies, and post-Albert Ayler free jazz.

Obomsawin considers herself lucky to work and perform with illustrious musicians  Esperanza Spalding, Taylor Ho Bynum, Kris Davis (at Jack London On Oct 11), Dave Holland, Angelica Sanchez, Billy Hart, Jeff Parker, Peter Apfelbaum, Craig Harris, Bill Cole, Althea Sully-Cole, Tomas Fujiwara, Mike Formanek, and more…
