Mahmoud Chouki is a Moroccan master guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and educator based in New Orleans whose work blends North African, Middle Eastern, jazz, and Western classical traditions. He began studying at the Conservatory of Larache at age eight and later at the National Conservatory in Rabat, winning First Prize at the International Guitar Competition in Spain at 18. Chouki is Curator of Music Performances at the New Orleans Museum of Art and teaches in the MENA Studies program at Tulane University. He composed the score for the 2021 Sundance Award–winning film Ma Belle, My Beauty and released the project Caravan from Marrakech to New Orleans. His honors include OffBeat Magazine’s 2020 Best Emerging Artist and Gambit Weekly’s 2022 Best World Artist, and he has performed at Paris’s Fête de la Musique alongside Jon Batiste. Through performance, composition, education, and cultural leadership, Mahmoud Chouki continues to embody a musical vision rooted in tradition while reaching confidently across borders.
