Formed in San Francisco in 1977, The Avengers were one of the fiercest voices of the original West Coast punk explosion. Fronted by the commanding and poetic Penelope Houston, the band fused raw, buzzsaw guitars with sharp political edge and melodic hooks that set them apart from their peers.

They’re perhaps best known for opening the legendary final U.S. show of the Sex Pistols at Winterland in 1978—cementing their place in punk history. Though their initial run was short-lived, tracks like “We Are the One” and “The American in Me” became underground anthems, blending defiance with emotional depth.

Over time, The Avengers earned cult status as pioneers of American punk—equal parts confrontational, intelligent, and unapologetically DIY.
