What a year it’s been, unprecedented to say the least, from the unexpected death of basketball legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gi Gi, to Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman, to the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and a long list of other victims of color at the hands of the police and others white Americans, and the countless marches, rallies and protest that followed, both here and abroad,  to COVID and the way it has rocked the world at large, nearly bringing life as we know it to a halt,  to the presidential election, and the tensions surrounding it  here in the states, to the #EndSars campaigns in Nigeria and the many other atrocities taking place on the planet who wouldn’t want to escape, free themselves from all of this? Well that is exactly what the dynamic duo known as MadgesidqCEG (MajesticSage) seek to do with their new single ‘Breakin’ Free.’

 

‘Breakin’ Free’ is a flashback to the mid to late nineties boom bap, if I may say WU-Tang type style where both Madgesdiq and CEG trade off displaying their skills as lyricist and emcees. Produced by Portland’s own Surebert, this RZA-esque head banger is filled line for line with relevant subject matter, witty wordplay, ill flows, and storytelling, reminding heads of the golden era of Hip Hop, where it was simply about spitting dope rhymes over dope beats; no frills, no floss, no gloss, just hot shit. 
 

On the hook, the two take a moment to exhale a bit beautifully conveying the message that ‘We will breathe breakin’ chains breakin’ free/We will breathe breakin’ chains breakin’ free . .  . flipping the narrative of the words to speak life instead of death. Understanding that words have power, and what one speaks they create.
