“It doesn't matter what I'm playing, I’m always shopping for the groove,” Lou Donaldson told The Wall Street Journal in 2010. “One way or the other, I always find it!” The veteran alto saxophonist found that groove in 1953 on a landmark Blue Note session (with trumpeter Clifford Brown and pianist Elmo Hope) that created the new jazz sound later known as “hard bop.” He found it again in 1967, when he scored a major crossover R&B hit with “Alligator Boogaloo.” In 1970, Lou hit the groove with “Pot Belly,” a track later sampled by Dr. Dre and A Tribe Called Quest, among others. Don’t miss out this true soul survivor of American music and 89 year old NEA Jazz Master – “Sweet Papa” Lou Donaldson, only at Jazz Standard!
