Lopaka Colon’s Sophisticated Savages
Introducing Molokaʻi’s Augie B. “Lopaka” Colón Jr., one of the top Latin-Afro-Cuban-Hawaiian percussionists and bird caller in the World. A multi Na Hōkū Hanohano Award winner (Hawaii’s version of the Grammy®), Lopaka is an energy explosion on and off the stage, adding a unique ingredient to every band, show, or musical project he is part of. His vibrant percussive sounds and exotic animal calls will now come center stage for his latest project “Lopaka Colón’s Sophisticated Savages.”
The Sophisticated Savages will pay homage to Lopaka’s deep musical lineage, as well as to the legacy of Lopaka’s Father, the “original” Sophisticated Savage and World famous percussionist, Augie B. Colón Sr. (known as the “Voice of Exotica” with his famous bird calls, as well as the “The Grandfather of Hawaii Percussion.” Considered one of the best percussionists world wide, who played with some of the best like Carlos Santana and Tito Puente).
Expect a musical journey through generations of Lopaka’s music, and influences with; Pure Heart, Colón, the Kaʻau Crater Boys, Willie K’s Barefoot Natives, while weaving together Hawaiian classics, Latin percussion jams and the Polynesian sounds of exotica music (Martin Denny, and Arthur Lyman), that Lopaka’s Father helped make famous.
Lopaka has been (and is) an integral component to so many bands and musicians in Hawaiʻi such as; Pure Heart (with Jake Shimabukuro and Jon Yamasato), Colón (with Jake Shimabukuro and Guy Cruz), Henry Kapono Band, Don Tiki, The Waitiki 7, Makana Trio, Pō & the 4Fathers, Willie K’s Barefoot Natives, and Mick Fleetwood’s Island Rumours Band to name a few!!
Joining Lopaka is a sophisticated group of Hawaii’s finest savages featuring vocalist Starr Kahaliki, Kalaʻe Camarillo (ukulele, guitar, and vocals), Abe lagrimas Jr. (vibes, ukulele), Rand Anderson (pedal steel, bass, and guitar), Garish Yarma (violin, and bass), Stu Sherman (drums), and Kit Ebersbach (keys). We will also have some very special guests going us as well!
Join Augie Colón Jr., or better known as “Lopaka”, as he and his “Sophisticated Savages” take you on a rhythmic excursion of exotic Polynesia.
