Description
The Pulsators have been ripping it up, tearing it down and rocking the house for decades. This is a band that truly loves what they do. The Pulsators own brand of original music has been described as a “spicy mix of hard driving Rockin’ Rhythm and Blues, New Orleans style funk and Rock Steady Reggae with a steady dose of the Blues thrown in.” The band consists of: Johnny Campbell: lead vocals and drums Doug McKenzie: guitar Mick Whittington: bass Rick Clifford: saxophone Glenn Sullivan: trumpet John Farey: keyboards and trombone Johnny Campbell handles most of the lead singing chores enhanced by powerful background vocal ensemble work featuring every member of the band. They have a sound that’s all their own, a combination of many influences that produces a blend both unique and familiar. If you want to dance and party to some authentic “feel good” music, the Pulsators are the band for you.

The Pulsators love to rip it up and tear the house down. Why? Because they have a passion for what they do.
The Pulsators play their own brand original of music which has been described as a spicy mix of hard driving Rockin’ Rhythm and Blues, New Orleans style funk and Rock Steady Reggae with a steady dose of the Blues thrown in. That’s a mouthful, but it goes down smooth.
Consisting of Johnny Campbell on Lead Vocals and Drums, Doug McKenzie on Guitar, Mick Whittington on Bass, Rick Clifford on Saxophone, Glenn Sullivan on Trumpet and John Farey on Keyboards the Pulsators have a straightforward yet rough and tumble sound. They have managed to create a sound that’s all their own, a sound that blends their many influences into a gumbo that is both unique and familiar. So, if you want to dance and party to a mixture of feel-good music, the Pulsators are the band for you.
In performance, the focus is on their self-penned songs, but they also throw in some of their favorites by other artists from Jimmy Reed and Huey ”Piano” Smith to Dandy Livingston and The Meters. In other words, the fellas pepper their performances with gems from the Blues, Reggae, Ska and Rhythm and Blues genres. It makes for a nice combination, it’s the music they like.
And the public likes them, too. The Pulsators have repeatedly won local popularity polls, including three Press Democrat Readers’ Choice awards.[1] They have performed extensively from California to Louisiana and are known for being a consistent, dependable crowd pleaser.
“This band continuously puts out quality music with the same commitment they had when they started,” said Bill Bowker, concert promoter and KRSH deejay. “With their dedication to making music that matters, combined with an infectious dance beat, their audience will continue to grow.”
Aside from being committed to their music, The band members are also community oriented and are known for volunteering to play benefit shows whenever local musicians or others are in crisis. According to Frank Hayhurst, organizer of numerous benefits for musicians in need, “The band enjoys a sterling reputation among leaders of the local music scene. The Pulsators have been the first to volunteer when the need arose.”
“This band has been at the heart of this community,” Hayhurst said.
As Art Neville[2] said “I’ve known these guys a long time and I always knew they had it in them. They’re cold blooded and throwin’ bricks, they’re a great band!”
As the music scene evolves, so too do the Pulsators. Their new record “Let’s Play” is testament to that.
The Pulsators are excited to get back where they belong, performing live and serving up, as one writer said of their music: “a combination of “make your feet move” dance music, great grooves, and soulful harmonies with a lot of tasteful horns”[3]

ThePulsators have managed to do this for the twenty plus years that they’ve been together.”
