Bluegrass on 3rd continues its tradition of celebrating every corner of bluegrass. This September, we're honored to welcome Laurie Lewis & The Right Hands, whose remarkable career helped broaden and redefine the possibilities of the music. Opening the evening are The Asheville Mountain Boys, a young band dedicated to recapturing the raw drive, spirit, and sound of bluegrass's earliest days.

California bluegrass legend Laurie Lewis has helped shape the sound of bluegrass for more than forty years, as an award-winning singer, songwriter, fiddler, producer, mentor, and Grammy-winning artist. While history rightly celebrates her as a pioneer for women in the genre, her impact reaches far beyond that distinction. Laurie Lewis didn't just help change opportunities in bluegrass, she helped change bluegrass itself.

Opening the night is a band just beginning its story by reaching back to bluegrass's beginnings. The Asheville Mountain Boys are dedicated to recapturing the raw emotion, drive, and authenticity that defined the music in its earliest days. Inspired by the music's earliest pioneers, they've built a reputation for hard-driving, no-frills traditional bluegrass. Their commitment to the roots of bluegrass makes them the perfect complement to an artist whose career has helped shape its future.

From California to Carolina, this is an evening that spans the full bluegrass landscape—from the music's earliest roots to one of the artists who helped redefine its future. Whether you're coming for a legend, a rising traditional band, or simply an unforgettable night of world-class bluegrass, we can't wait to share it with you.

  • Laurie Lewis

    Folk

For nearly four decades, Laurie Lewis has gathered fans and honors for her powerful and emotive voice and her versatile, dynamic songwriting. She is a sought-after recording producer and an equally skilled teacher and mentor.

And she is an inspiration and a ground-breaker – across genres, across geography and across gender barriers.

Laurie has shown us how a woman can blend into any part of the classic bluegrass singing trio, and she showed us how a great voice could move fluidly between bluegrass and other types of music.  She showed us how a female fiddler could emulate the strength and grit of the early bluegrass musicians. She has shown how a Californian can appeal to traditional bluegrass audiences, as well as winning acclaim in the worlds of Americana and folk music.

She has shown us how to lead bands of talented musicians – learning from them while helping them make their best music.  And she has shown us how to thrive in a constantly changing musical environment – without ever sacrificing her art.

  • The Asheville Mountain Boys

    Americana

By their name, you know where they are from, and by their sound, you know what they are about. The Asheville Mountain Boys are on a mission to capture not just the style but the spirit of traditional bluegrass. Asheville, NC has long been known for great music and its roots in bluegrass go back to the founding of the genre (Bill Monroe’s first broadcast performance as the Bluegrass Boys was at Asheville radio station WWNC in 1938) A group that firmly stakes its claim to the tradition of the music from the area, The Asheville Mountain Boys spring onto the scene with a thought, ”What happened to bluegrass?” It’s not a disparaging one that condemns current styles in the genre but rather asks, “Why do we love this music in the first place” and answers with an approach that is true to the originators of the genre in the sense of both style and philosophy. Bluegrass is raw emotion, excitement, drive, and authenticity. It is not sanitized or compromised but a reflection of the lives of those who play it. It’s storytelling that follows a throughline of tradition.
