Col3trane’s bubbling career first rose to the surface with the release of his 2017 mixtape, Tsarina. Influenced by the UK-native’s vast musical exposure, the mixtape garnered serious attention for its unique sound; generating 3MM streams on Spotify within the first month. Col3trane’s second project, BOOT (Breathing Out of Time), proved to be just as impactful. In 2019, he capitalized on his massive EP Heroine with leading track “Superpowers” featuring Goldlink. In 2020, the young Londoner maintained momentum with love ballads, “Someone To Watch Over Me” and “Good News” into collaborations with Kiana Lede on “Clutch” and best mate and fellow Londoner, Mahalia on “Pretty.”
In 2021, Col3trane gears up for his debut album which will showcase his range and lyricism; containing tracks which lend themselves to commercial appeal while preserving the artist’s eclectic vibe and RnB roots with his first single "Californication (Feels Like I'm Falling In Love)" produced by SG Lewis.
"My upcoming album, Lush Life - Stands for 'Loving Until Something Hurts.' Trying to tell a story through the songs of how when you invest everything that you have into something, it always comes back to hurt you in the end. When you give your all to something, you leave yourself vulnerable. People often exploit other people’s vulnerability. This has happened to me many times. The feeling of living in pure ecstasy only for that feeling to wear off and leave you feeling broken. ‘Even the brightest lights cast dark shadows.’
At the same time, talking about the Lush Life that we all live. How everything is in excess. How people fall in love with this gluttonous lifestyle in these big cities and it ends up ruining them and their integrity. On top of that, Lush Life is my favourite jazz standard. Originally performed by my namesake John Coltrane, and Johnny Hartman. I've interpolated music and lyrics from some of my favourite Jazz musicians throughout the album.
Flowers are perfectly emblematic of the story of this album. You think of the most beautiful bouquet of flowers; colourful, vibrant and beautiful. After a while… the flowers will slowly wilt and ultimately die. The beauty fades and you realise that it was only short lived, temporary. Same goes for love. You invest all of yourself into someone/something, and when you look back in retrospect, it doesn’t look the same as it always did. ‘Nothing lasts… everything dies’."
