The 2024 Seagaze Festival, sponsored by KEXP and DKFM

As the Northwest’s first four-day shoegaze, post-punk, and psych rock festival, Seattle’s not-for-profit Seagaze Festival is a smaller grass-roots festival that emphasizes carefully curated, stellar lineups in intimate venues, and artistry and experience over commercialism. Since its launch in 2016, Seagaze has consistently showcased unique and eclectic performances by Pacific Northwest and international bands, providing concertgoers with compelling nights of beautiful noise. The 2024 Seagaze Festival is the first Seagaze festival to be held at the Tractor Tavern after the closing of the Lo-Fi Performance Gallery last summer.

2024 Seagaze Seattle lineup

The 2024 festival continues to highlight critically acclaimed and up-and-coming shoegaze, post-punk, and psych-rock bands from the Pacific Northwest and around the world. This year’s lineup features: The Veldt (Chapel Hill NC), Sun Atoms (PDX), Federale (PDX), Fotoform (SEA), Goodbye Ranger(LA) bloococoon (SEA), Darkswoon (PDX), Newagahelers (SEA), Ten Million Lights (PDX)  Waves Crashing (Olympia)

The impact of the Seagaze Festival

Seagaze strives to support both established and up-and-coming bands in shoegaze, post-punk, and psych-rock. Many bands and artists have benefitted from the attention they received from being part of the festival, and bands have the opportunity to connect with like-minded artists from across the country and the world. The festival also serves a valuable purpose in creating community and increasing the audience for shoegaze, post-punk, and psych rock, all of which have had a major resurgence worldwide in recent years. People who are new to the genre experience a carefully curated cross-section of quality acts, while those more versed in the scenes can discover newer and more obscure bands. Everyone hopefully has the chance to broaden their musical horizons. The Seagaze Festival strongly values community and representation, and it strives to build a community of artists who promote and support each other while also strengthening the draw and increasing the profile of such bands.

  • Federale

    Federale

    Pop

Federale is a seven-piece ensemble based in Portland, OR. Spearheaded by longtime Brian Jonestown Massacre bassist Collin Hegna, the band was conceived as an outlet to channel inspiration from ‘60s & ‘70s European soundtracks, particularly those from Italy made famous by the Spaghetti Western & Giallo genres.

As a mournful whistle carves through fevered melancholia, the first stirrings of No Justice‘s title track evoke the mean streets and rusted prairies of a blighted small folk roiling with palpable desperation. Embracing the enormous scope of orchestral cinematic production while subduing the bombast of electrified riffage, Collin Hegna has honed a taut, gleaming precision from his passion project’s signature sound. When his honeyed baritone waltzes with the operatic wizardry of bandmate Maria Karlin, the finely-etched lyrical depths fortify Federale’s cinematic sway.

Spare yet sumptuous, distilling the lean, gritty essence of grindhouse anomie and wielding orchestral flourishes of widescreen delicacy, No Justice feels like the defining statement of a band fully-realized – a sultry, restless stormcloud arising from the darkness at the edge of town to draw forth the fated reckoning.

    Fotoform

    Post-Punk

Taking their name from a mid-century avant-garde photography movement, Seattle’s Fotoform create melodic, gauzy, driving post-punk and darkwave. Their second album, Horizons, pivots from the wall of guitars on their self-titled debut to a more nuanced and cinematic canvas, adding synths to the layers of guitars, fusing the textures of shoegaze and dream pop with the drive of post-punk. Now a trio of Kim House and Geoff Cox (C’est la Mort) and Michael Schorr (Death Cab for Cutie, Long Winters), Fotoform have further refined their plaintive, bass-driven kinetic swoon, which The Big Takeover describes as “a riot of ‘80s post-punk.”

    Press
“This Seattle band’s second album is a well-crafted blend of post-punk and dream-pop with atmospheric guitars and synths, driving rhythms, ethereal vocals, hypnotic song hooks and lyrics of grief, love and loss.” – KEXP

“The excellent new LP from Seattle’s Fotoform pairs the moodiness of goth with drifting dream pop melodies, resulting in bewitching songs.” – Bandcamp New & Notable

“One of the finest pleasures for fans is marveling over how a favorite band can regularly top previous releases. Drummer Michael Schorr and bassist/keyboardist/singer Kim House dig hard into hard-swinging, booming post-punk rhythms—simultaneously sonorous and mean—which vaults Geoffrey Cox’s guitar effects battering into cloudbursts of maximum dreampop. House’s pipes have never sounded more convincing, like Lush’s Miki Berenyi soldered into Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell. One of our greatest American Anglo-esque bands. Wow.”
    – Jack Rabid, The Big Takeover
