*Happy Hour Concert Series* featuring Karen Shiraishi and Raph Zee Karen Shiraishi is a British-Japanese pianist and composer based in New Orleans. A recipient of the Chamber Music America Performance Plus grant, Shiraishi’s debut album featuring Herlin Riley, Max Moran, Andrew Baham and Julian Lee, is set to be released in 2026. Already having developed a self-assured, recognisable voice as a composer and improviser, her music is melodically driven, harmonically rich, and imbued with swing. She has gained attention in the traditional music scene, appearing with Shannon Powell, Kermit Ruffins, Stephen Walker and the Preservation Hall All-Stars. She has also established herself as a highly sought-after side player in the straight-ahead. Since her arrival to New Orleans in 2018, Raph Zee’s unique approach to playing trumpet in various styles has led to opportunities playing Jazz Fest with Trumpet Mafia and Quiana Lynell, performances with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, as well as the Treme Fall Festival & residency (fall 2019) at the Hotel Monteleone with Shannon Powell. These days, she can most consistently be found playing with The Jump Hounds, Jon Ronige and the Good For Nothin’ Band.
