Description
Juan Pastor's musical journey from Lima to Chicago is a fusion of tradition and innovation epitomized by his ensemble, Chinchano. Rooted in the rhythmic legacy of Peruvian folk music, Pastor's upbringing in a music-filled Lima home imbued him with a deep understanding of traditional percussion. His encounter with jazz sparked a revelation, leading him to relocate to Chicago in 2006 in pursuit of deeper musical exploration. Amidst the vibrant jazz scene of Chicago, Pastor honed his skills and collaborated with notable artists like Marquis Hill, Miguel Zenón, Paquito D'Rivera and others. Chinchano emerged as Pastor's brainchild, blending jazz quintet nuances with Peruvian rhythmic traditions, creating a unique musical tapestry. Their albums, from the debut "Chinchano" to the introspective "Cachito," reflect Pastor's dual identity and evolving artistry. Chinchano's notable performance at the Pritzker Pavilion during the Chicago Jazz Festival 2023 showcased their growing popularity and musical prowess. Alongside leading Chinchano, Pastor imparts his knowledge as a faculty member at North Central College, shaping the next generation of musicians. Chinchano is currently preparing to record their fifth album, and they will debut new material on this occasion, continuing to push the boundaries of their musical exploration and innovation. Their music transcends boundaries, weaving together Peru's haunting melodies, jazz harmonies, and Chicago's bluesy aesthetics into a timeless narrative of universal language and musical evolution.
