In February 2019, trumpeter and composer Josh Lawrence released Lost Works (Posi–Tone Records). The multi–part suite at the heart of this recording, he explains, “deals with three works by German Expressionist painter Wassily Kandinsky that were labelled ‘degenerate art’ by Hitler’s Nazi Party, confiscated from the Bauhaus, and ultimately destroyed in World War II.” Now, aided by a grant from Chamber Music America, Lawrence has created a video album, Lost Works Live – and this special Jazz Standard one–nighter kicks off its release. Lawrence moved to New York following his graduation from Philadelphia’s University of the Arts and studied with pianist Barry Harris; during an extended stay in Poland, he collaborated with a multitude of European players. Since 2010, Josh Lawrence has worked with Orrin Evans’ Captain Black Big Band, Terell Stafford’s Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia, and his own ten–piece electro-jazz ensemble, the Fresh Cut Orchestra, co–led with drummer Anwar Marshall and bassist Jason Fraticelli.
