Description
Jonathan Hannau is a Chicago-based composer and pianist devoted to the surreal, minimal, abstract, and colorful possibilities of music. He actively embraces eclecticism and explores concepts of narrative, drama, and stark expression by evoking a kaleidoscopic range of timbres. As a pianist he has been praised for his delicate, refined touch, his capable handling of the extremes of dynamic shape, and his uncanny knack for navigating complex polyrhythms. His multi-style performance history has helped foster a unique approach to piano performance, pushing the limits of what is possible on the instrument. His inspirations come from many avenues.
His second LP for solo piano, The Cottage at the End of the Forest builds off from his first LP Pieces I Wrote on a Cold Winter Night. Taking inspiration from a summer in New England and his interest in isolated landscapes long reclaimed from nature and loss of human contact, he spins a tale of a lone traveler traversing through these environments, in search of something more. Complex textures, winding melodies, and strange contours lead the listener on a journey of their own imagination.
___
Craig Davis Pinson (he/him) is a composer, improviser, and musicologist from Mexico City, Mexico. Grounded in the raw energy of punk and heavy music, Craig’s work often spills over into contemporary classical and experimental music. Pinson Chamber Band is a platform for his hybrid collaborative works, cultivating aspects of composition and improvisation with musicians from a wide range of stylistic backgrounds in Chicago. The resulting music draws from post-rock, chamber music, and experimental instrumental techniques to conjure up both visceral and dream-like sounds, while feeding off of the productive friction between unified group playing and the individual expressivity of each member.
