Saxophonist Jimmy Greene returns to the Regattabar with his all-star quartet on February 27 on the heels of the release of his latest album, As We Are Now (Greene Music Works). The album’s 4 ½ star rating in DownBeat Magazine’s September issue landed it on the year end list celebrating the Best Jazz Albums of 2025. Joining Greene for this special night are Grammy® Award-winning pianist Zaccai Curtis, bassist Dezron Douglas and drummer Jonathan Barber. Audience members will be able to purchase CDs and 180-gram vinyl copies of As We Are Now after the show!
A native of Connecticut, Jimmy Greene is one of the most respected saxophonists of his generation. As We Are Now is Greene’s thirteenth release as a bandleader. Greene’s 2020 release, While Looking Up (Mack Avenue) was described by one reviewer as “ . . . a wonder. Rapture enveloped in gold.” His 2014 release Beautiful Life (Greene Music Works/Mack Avenue), honoring the memory of his daughter Ana, received two Grammy® Award nominations – one for Best Jazz Instrumental Album and another for Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals for his song “When I Come Home.”
Greene has garnered awards in composition from ASCAP/IAJE, Chamber Music America, and the State of Connecticut. In addition, was named the 2018 winner of DownBeat Magazine’s Critics Poll in the Rising Star Soprano Saxophone category and First Runner-Up in the 1996 Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Saxophone Competition. Greene has well over one hundred recording credits to his name and performs worldwide with his group, as well as with legendary bassist Ron Carter’s Foursight Quartet. He has recorded and/or performed in the bands of Horace Silver, Freddie Hubbard, Harry Connick, Jr., Tom Harrell, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Kenny Barron, among many others.
Greene is a protégé of legendary saxophonist Jackie McLean and earned a bachelor’s degree in music from the Hartt School, a master’s degree in music education from Boston University and a doctorate in music from the Manhattan School of Music. He is currently a Professor of Music and Coordinator of Jazz Studies at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, CT.
