Jessa Taylor is a sixteen-year-old singer songwriter who tells stories through genuine lyrics and memorable melodies. Singing is as natural as breathing for the young prodigy. Since the moment she could talk, she sang. A recent move to Nashville, Tennessee solidifies Jessa’s Plan A. “I am writing, recording, performing and doing everything I need to do to be able to perform on worldwide stages, playing at sold out stadiums. There is no Plan B,” Jessa proclaims.
Courageous and undaunted, Jessa jumped into the Nashville music scene. She cut her first EP at OmniSound Studios with veteran producer, Preston Sullivan. The tracks are catchy and hook-filled with Jessa’s vocals and guitar playing defining the sound of her self-penned tunes. “Jessa wanted “You Picked the Wrong Girl” recorded as a female version of Jason Aldean: edgy, heavy guitar riffs, big bass line. We got it!” recalls Sullivan. “She’s a huge fan of Shania and really likes Miranda Lambert. Both women are confident and compelling, similar traits Jessa conveys in her songs, musical style and performance - even at her age. She has a very, very strong sense of self.”
“One of the first songs I wrote was because someone made me mad. He will remain nameless, but I was so mad at him that I went into my room crying, opened the hook-book and wrote you’re just a sharp mouthed, slick-tongued, short tempered, pathetic immature boy. That’s from “Karma.” “Never No Way No How” is more about me being a little crazy,” Jessa laughs.
Jessa remembers her first public performance singing karaoke at the county fair. “My family and I had spent the entire day at the fair, and just as we were leaving, my eyes lit up when I spotted a karaoke booth. I begged my parents to let me try it.” When Jessa started singing huge crowds gathered to watch and applaud. Her parents stood there, shocked by the crowd’s reaction. Thinking it was just luck, Jessa’s parents took her to a karaoke bar the next night, and the crowd responded the same way. Friday nights soon became karaoke nights, with Jessa’s mom and friends piling into the SUV and going to the local Applebee’s for dinner and more karaoke. A woman approached Jessa and asked her how many years she had been taking vocal lessons. She had never had a lesson in her life. It was suddenly very clear that the entire family take Jessa’s artistic gifts more seriously.
Jessa has dutifully studied music for the past six years. A typical week is 8:00 rise and shine; two-hour dance classes five days a week; studio lessons four hours a day/three times a week; weekly vocal lessons; ear training and rhythm training every night, plus exercise and home work. What really makes Jessa unique is her strong work ethic. She works full time writing with some of Nashville’s top songwriters and continues perfecting her craft.
