Description
Composing music inspired by painting dates back as far as the 12th century (Hildegard of Bingen) and, in Jazz, Duke Ellington’s “Degas Suite” comes to mind along with Branford Marsalis’ “Romare Bearden Revealed.” But on his latest High Note albumJeremy Pelt, The Artist, the acclaimed trumpeter and composer may be the first jazz musician to examine the relationship between music and sculpture. The five–movement “Rodin Suite” muses not only on works left to us by the French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840–1917), but how his art might have evolved if he were still with us today. To supplement pianist Victor Gould, bassist Vicente Archer, and a few other of his “regs,” Pelt added guitarist Alex Wintz, percussionist Ismel Wignall, and Chien Chien Lu on vibes and marimba for an ensemble sound capable of delicacy and color as well as full–on modern jazz shouts. The result is a thoughtful and thought–provoking recording from (you guessed it) Jeremy Pelt, The Artist. Jeremy Pelt – trumpet Victor Gould – piano Corcoran Holt – bass Allan Mednard – drums Alex Wintz – guitar  Ismel Wignall – percussion  Chien Chien Lu – vibes & marimba
