Music Director Alex Rybeck Directed by Sara Louise Lazarus With Tom Hubbard, bass and Dan Gross, drums Award-winning vocalist Jeff Harnar revisits his acclaimed concert The 1959 Broadway Songbook, a richly crafted musical collage celebrating the remarkable season of musicals playing in New York in 1959, often described as the twilight of Broadway’s Golden Age. This one-night-only event will take place at Birdland in NYC on Monday, June 8 at 7pm. Drawing from landmark productions including Gypsy, The Sound of Music, Fiorello!, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, The Music Man, Flower Drum Song, Bells Are Ringing, and Once Upon a Mattress, the program weaves together more than forty songs by legendary writers such as Jule Styne, Stephen Sondheim, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg, Leonard Bernstein, Comden and Green, and Lerner and Loewe. Highlights include “Tonight,” “On the Street Where You Live,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Til There Was You,” “The Party’s Over,” and “Everything’s Coming Up Roses.” Structured in the classic form of a Broadway evening, the concert features an Overture, Entr’acte, and Intermission, with a lighthearted musical salute to the popular culture of 1959. Harnar premiered The 1959 Broadway Songbook as his debut engagement at the Algonquin Hotel’s Oak Room in 1991. The program was later recorded live for Original Cast Records, televised nationally on PBS, and presented in major engagements across the United States and London. Jeff Harnar is a multi-award-winning cabaret, concert, and recording artist whose appearances include the Cole Porter and Noël Coward Centennial Galas at Carnegie Hall. His PBS broadcasts include The 1959 Broadway Songbook with Alex Rybeck, American Songbook Live from NJPAC: Stephen Sondheim, and Remember: Songs of the Holidays with KT Sullivan.
