"An esteemed post-bop saxophonist with gospel and blues written into his sound.” – Giovanni Russonello, New York Times
“Among the last of legendary drummer Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Jackson has continued to deliver the message of African-American music in all its glory.” – Kevin Lowenthal, Boston Globe
Internationally acclaimed tenor saxophonist and composer Javon Jackson, who came to prominence as a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, is now paying tribute to another American music master: Bob Dylan. Jackson celebrates the release of his new album “Jackson Plays Dylan” by delving into songs that span more than three decades of the legendary songwriter’s career, from still-poignant folk anthems to incisive and timeless love songs.
The release follows a pair of recordings that Jackson made with the famed poet Nikki Giovanni, both of which was nominated for a NAACP Image Award in the category of Outstanding Jazz Album.
Jackson was a member of the final edition of the Jazz Messengers, playing with Blakey from 1986 to 1990. In 1991, he made his recording debut with Me and Mr. Jones, featuring James Williams, Christian McBride, and master drummer Elvin Jones. He joined Jones’ group in 1992, appearing on the great drummer’s albums Youngblood and Going Home. Jackson’s 1994 Blue Note debut, When the Time Is Right, was a straight-ahead affair produced by iconic jazz vocalist and bandleader Betty Carter.
Joining Jackson for the Dylan release party at Scullers are Jeremy Manasia on piano/Fender Rhodes, Isaac Levien on acoustic and electric bass, and Ryan Sands on drums.
