Description
Get ready to climb an “Alto Summit” when two contemporary alto sax greats join forces this week for a gala joint birthday celebration! Steve Wilson was born February 9, 1961, in Hampton, VA; in addition to alto and soprano saxophones, he plays flute, clarinet, and piccolo. As a musician “essential to this city's jazz landscape” (The Wall Street Journal), Wilson has released eight albums as a leader and brought his distinctive sound to more than 150 recordings led by such celebrated artists as Chick Corea, George Duke, Michael Brecker, Dianne Reeves, Maria Schneider, and Joe Henderson. Alto and soprano saxophonist Jaleel Shaw, born February 11, 1978, in Philadelphia PA, won the 2014 DownBeat Critics Poll for Rising Star Alto Saxophonist. He is a longtime member of both the Roy Haynes Quartet and Tom Harrell’s “Colors Of A Dream”; he’s also performed with Christian McBride, Jason Moran, the Mingus Big Band, and Pat Metheny, to name but a few. With an all-star rhythm section, the meeting of two of the leading alto saxophonists of our time is surely to be a performance to remember.
