  • Tom Meltzer

    Americana

Tom Meltzer has been writing and performing his songs for more than forty years, building a career defined by sharp storytelling, wry humor, and a deep affection for American roots music. His first recorded composition, “Paul Cézanne” (The Special Guests), earned spots on Robert Christgau’s Village Voice “best singles” and “best videos” lists in the mid‑1980s, an early sign of Meltzer’s distinctive voice and craft.

The Special Guests evolved into 5 Chinese Brothers, the New York–based roots/Americana/alt‑country band with Meltzer on guitar and lead vocals. Over the next decade, the band released four critically acclaimed albums, toured the U.S., Canada, and Europe, and appeared on Country Countdown with Travis Tritt (VH1), The World Cafe, and Mountain Stage. The group disbanded in 1999, but its harmony‑rich sound and smart, funny songwriting left a lasting mark on the genre.

After relocating to the Durham–Chapel Hill area, Meltzer continued writing and recording, contributing songs to compilation albums for Sound Asleep Records and Bear Family Records. He performed with several regional bands — Meltzer‑Hart, The Frosted Sugar Bombs, The Banana Seats, and The Nashvilifiers — and created The Princeton Review Vocabulary Minute, a Schoolhouse Rock‑style educational podcast with roughly 120 episodes.

Nice Things marks Meltzer’s first solo album, a collection that brings together decades of craft, curiosity, and lived‑in musical experience. His Bluebird Cafe appearance highlights both new work and the storytelling spirit that has defined his career.
