August Ponthier
Folk
Texas-raised, Brooklyn-based August Ponthier (they/them) creates soul-searching songs with the intimacy of a journal entry and unbridled imagination of a movie. Praised by Billboard as “an artist with seemingly unlimited potential,” Ponthier is known for their deeply personal and evocative music that blends alternative, indie, country, and pop influences.
Ponthier broke through with the 2021 EP, Faking My Own Death, and soon after teamed up with Lord Huron for the hit single, “I Lied,” which they performed together on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. 2022 saw Ponthier’s sophomore EP, Shaking Hands with Elvis, earn raves with Consequence comparing the project to “the dynamic folk-tinged stoicism of Kacey Musgraves and Orville Peck.” In 2024, they completed the narrative trilogy with the Breaking the Fourth Wall EP and set the scene for their first full length project.
Ponthier recently released their debut album, Everywhere Isn’t Texas, a deeply personal coming-of-age narrative and candid reflection on growing up as a queer person in conservative Texas. NPR Music called it “a true opus to the wonders of self-discovery and reinvention, a fully realized, pristine debut about how exhilarating and even terrifying it can be to keep changing all your plans,” and Variety claimed it’s an album “easy to imagine impacting young people deep into their own identity journeys or anyone into the thoughtful side of pop.”
Ponthier has toured with Bleachers, Holly Humberstone, The Japanese House, Hayley Kiyoko, NIKI, and Maren Morris, and been championed by Elton John and Brandi Carlile. Ponthier was featured in John’s Oscar nominated documentary, Elton John: Never too Late and performed three sold out nights at Red Rocks with Brandi Carlile who called them “the best gay country artist there is.” Their songwriting, voice, and creative vision has also been praised by Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Out, Vulture, NME, FADER, Stereogum, Vogue and more.
