Icona Pop always represented the ultimate freedom of expression for its two members and longtime friends: Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo. Their freedom as women and artists has underscored their thriving impact and influence as one of pop music’s most innovative and irresistible multiplatinum chart-topping forces. However, their third full-length album, Ritual, is actually about ownership. They are owning who they are as mothers, creative partners, entrepreneurs, leaders, sisters, and women. These women are running the dancefloor now. Caroline and Aino went from being club kids in Stockholm to commanding clubs, arenas, and festivals from the stage. Following an independent grind, Icona Pop first reached critical mass during 2012. The duo’s breakout single, “I Love It” [feat. Charli XCX], has endured as a generational banger. It went RIAA 5x-Platinum, sold north of 10 million digital singles, and even entered rarified air as part of Spotify’s “Billions Club” with over 1.2 billion streams on the platform. Following their Gold-certified full-length debut, This Is… Icona Pop in 2013, they notched two more Gold singles, headlined sold out tours, and supported the likes of Miley Cyrus, One Direction, The Chainsmokers, and the late Avicii. Beyond performances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy FallonThe Today ShowGood Morning America, and America’s Got Talent, they popped up on the classic HBO series Girls, in a sketch on SNL, and even as Satin and Chenille in TrollsTrolls World Tour, and Trolls Band Together. Boasting collaborations with Joel Corry, Galantis, Sofi Tukker, and more, their sophomore set Club Romantech arrived to critical acclaim in 2023. It incited the applause of The GuardianForbesBustleRolling StonePitchfork, and more. The spirit of sisterhood shines brighter than ever on their third full-length offering, Ritual. The LP invites you into a world of late-night conjuration of club-ready rhythms, emotional synthesizers, bittersweet pop melodies and lyrics that are both raw and vulnerable. It’s the sound of two women at the height of their emotional intelligence and creative confidence as the regain ownership of their artistry and lives.
