Description
Hovan, Goodman, Henry
Collectively, drummer Chris Hovan, guitarist Don Goodman, and bassist Warren Henry bring decades of experience across a wide range of venues and musical styles. Their paths first converged years ago through jazz musician Ed Alisauskas, whose efforts to connect local talent led to the formation of the Jazz Shepherds, an ensemble that often included all three players.
Following Alisauskas’ untimely passing, Goodman has continued to carry forward the Jazz Shepherds’ philosophy, frequently collaborating with Hovan and Henry. Under Hovan’s leadership, the trio backed Cleveland vocalist Dane Vannatter at the Lyric Bistro in Fairport Harbor last summer. Audiences can expect a vibrant mix of jazz and blues-inflected standards, highlighted by Goodman’s expressive vocals and the group’s commitment to improvisation and collective interplay.
For more than 30 years, drummer Chris Hovan has been an active presence on the Cleveland music scene, performing with leaders such as Bob Niederriter, Mark Russo, Moises Borges, Josh Smith, the DanJo Big Band, and Just Jazz. He also works regularly as a percussionist with China Grove and Funkology. His own ensembles—the Organic Trio and the Generations Quartet—have appeared at many notable local and regional venues, including The Bop Stop, Blu Jazz, Con Alma, and Cliff Bell’s.
A New Jersey native, guitarist Don Goodman has devoted most of his life to music. Now retired from his day job, he maintains a busy performance schedule, working with many of Cleveland’s finest musicians, among them Saam Cabot, Ed Lemmers, Edgar Cora, Scott Turner, and Jim Cirillo. His regular rotation of venues includes Seeing Double, The Society Lounge, and LaLa’s in the Lakes.
Bassist Warren Henry, who once operated his own music shop, has long been active in multiple corners of the music world, from performance to education. Like Goodman and Hovan, he moves comfortably across genres. He can be heard regularly with groups such as The Zydeco Kings and Esto Jazz, performing at venues including the Lyric Bistro, Blu Jazz, the Water Street Tavern, and the Lorain Palace Theater. He has also held down the bass chair for Mind Over Matter: A Tribute to Hall & Oates at the Music Box.
