Description
Houston Person and Jazz Standard are now in our seventeenth yeartogether: The saxophone legend made his first appearance on our stage in May 2002, and he’s still going strong. Born 1934 in Florence, South Carolina, his infectious swing feel and tender phraseology have cemented Houston Person’s position as an elder statesman of jazz. He’s appeared on classic recordings by (among others) Grant Green, Gene Ammons, Charles Earland, and Johnny "Hammond" Smith; his working quartet is notable for its sensitivity to Houston’s every line. “A revered tenor saxophonist who can coax the blues out of every note he blows, bathing the room in old–school warmth.” (The New Yorker)

Houston Person and Jazz Standard go way back – to May 2002 (to be precise), when the veteran tenor saxophonist made his first appearance on our stage. In his review of Person’s 2012 engagement at Ronnie Scott’s in London, The Guardian’s John Fordham wrote: “His sound has become uniquely characterful: an idiosyncratic edit of all he has learned, expressed in shrugging hoots, briefly cantering bop sprints, spacious and softly blown ballads.” And in his Observer review of Houston’s High Note CD So Nice, Dave Gelly attested: “Houston Person's tenor saxophone has all the hallmarks – poise, simple elegance and that mixture of gravitas and slight swagger that comes from having nothing left to prove… His playing just goes on getting better.” Don’t miss this gentle giant of the tenor saxophone, this week at Jazz Standard!
