Description
Houston Person and Jazz Standard are now in our sixteenth year together: The saxophone legend made his first appearance on our stage in May 2002, and he’s still going strong. Born 1934 in Florence, South Carolina, his infectious swing feel and tender phraseology have cemented Houston Person’s position as an elder statesman of jazz. Long associated with such much–missed peers as Horace Silver and Etta Jones, he continues to collaborate with younger musicians such as Bill Charlap and Roy Hargrove while leading a quartet notable for its sensitivity to Houston’s every line. In his Observer review of the High Note CD So Nice, Dave Gelly attested: “Houston Person's tenor saxophone has all the hallmarks – poise, simple elegance and that mixture of gravitas and slight swagger that comes from having nothing left to prove…his playing just goes on getting better.” Don’t miss this gentle giant of the tenor saxophone – live and swinging at Jazz Standard!
Houston Person – tenor saxophone
Lafayette Harris – piano

Houston Person and Jazz Standard go way back – to May 2002, to be precise, when he made his first appearance on our stage. Born 1934 in Florence, South Carolina, the veteran saxophonist’s silky tone and infectious swing feel and tender phrases have cemented Houston a true elder statesman of jazz today, playing with his peers Horace Silver and Etta Jones, but also with younger stars, such as Bill Charlap and Roy Hargrove. In his Observer review of the artist’s HighNote CD So Nice, Dave Gelly attested: “Houston Person's tenor saxophone has all the hallmarks – poise, simple elegance and that mixture of gravitas and slight swagger that comes from having nothing left to prove…his playing just goes on getting better.” Don’t miss this gentle giant of the tenor saxophone – only at Jazz Standard!
