Description
Herlin Riley is a celebrated New Orleans–born jazz drummer, composer, and educator whose deep roots in the city’s musical traditions and mastery of rhythm have made him a defining figure in contemporary jazz. A prodigy who began playing drums at age three and later studied at Southern University, Riley went on to perform with legends like Ahmad Jamal, George Benson, and Harry Connick Jr., and gained international acclaim as a longtime member of Wynton Marsalis’s ensembles, including the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Known for blending traditional New Orleans rhythms with modern jazz, he has also led his own projects, such as New Direction, while dedicating himself to mentoring young musicians and sharing the spirit of his hometown with audiences around the world. Weedie Braimah is a premier djembe master who began performing at age two in Ghana and continued his musical journey in East St. Louis, where he immersed himself in African diasporic traditions. Born into a family of esteemed musicians and trained by masters including Mamady Keïta and Famoudou Konaté, he has built a dynamic career performing with artists such as Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah, Baaba Maal, and Ravi Coltrane. A powerful performer, educator, and cultural ambassador, Braimah is known for his electrifying ability to connect with audiences and for his ongoing dedication to preserving and evolving African musical traditions. Tonight the two join forces for an exceptional performance featuring special guests.
