Gretchen Parlato is a GRAMMY®-nominated vocalist, songwriter, and producer celebrated as one of the most inventive and mesmerizing voices in contemporary jazz. Known for her distinctive blend of intimacy, rhythmic precision, and global influence, Parlato has redefined the art of jazz singing for a new generation.
A native of Los Angeles, CA, and graduate of LACHSA and UCLA, Parlato made history as the first vocalist ever accepted into the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance. She went on to win the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocal Competition, launching a career that has earned her international acclaim.
Her albums—including Flor (2021), Lean In (2023) with guitarist Lionel Loueke, Live in NYC (2013), The Lost and Found (2011), and In a Dream (2009)—have garnered multiple GRAMMY® nominations, numerous industry awards, and recognition from DownBeat, Jazzwise, The Guardian, and Billboard.
Parlato has performed worldwide at iconic venues such as the Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center, as well as major festivals including Montreal, North Sea, and London Jazz Festivals. She has also been featured on over 100 recordings, collaborating with artists across genres and generations.
Now based in Los Angeles, Parlato is a dedicated educator on faculty at UCLA, continuing to nurture the next wave of jazz innovators. Her most recent single, If It Was, honors Altadena, CA in the wake of the Eaton Fire. Her forthcoming album, The Wise Ones (Edition Records) brings her back together with a close group of longtime collaborators from her earliest recordings, including co-producer Alan Hampton, Robert Glasper, Gerald Clayton, and Mark Guiliana and features guests Meshell Ndegeocello, Becca Stevens, and Moonchild’s Amber Navran.
