    Music

When you hit on a good sound, stick to it like glue. New York’s The Swedes have hit on the great pop sounds of the Beatles, blended them with the Glam Rock style of Queen and the melodic pop smarts of a modern artist like Ben Folds and they fold them all together into one juicy mix worthy of immediate praise.

The Swedes (Chris Edwards on keys, Phil Crain on bass, Phil Harbut on drums, Tony Dilella on guitar and Jon Gray on guitar and vocals) take the sounds of their influences and turn them into something in the vein of another great indie New York band, The Attorneys. This is an album full of Beatlesque melodies and harmonies, coupled with the strong vocal presence of a Freddie Mercury type. It’s a sound which is at once out of time and place, allowing the band to place it in the modern sence with slick production and exceptionally strong hooks, coupled with extremely competant musicianship. In all, it’s a remarkably complete package for a band which, to my knowledge, remains independent.

The album’s first three tracks (“Julie Walker,” “Making Up Words” and “Patriot”) are all single-worthy, showcasing the band’s sound to the fullest extent. These songs all positively swim in strong guitar hooks and keyboard excellence. And Gray’s distinct vocals add the final layer to the mix, giving the band the ability to stand out amid the crowd. The question is, will American radio be ready to accept this kind of music?

The album plays remarkably well as a whole. It doesn’t overstay its welcome, at ten tracks and thirty-three minutes in length, and each of the songs contributes to the overall depth of the band’s body of work. Even when they do a ballad of sorts (“Stretched Too Tight”) they defy expectations by crafting a vocal hook which reminds a listener of the likes of Ben Folds and Barenaked Ladies, two comparisons which don’t necessarily fit the mold the band has led us to expect. That’s a great thing. If you can keep listeners guessing, they’re less likely to get bored and more likely to make a connection.

In the end, Nothing Says Rich Like Golf Clubs is a respectable debut from a band with a ton of potential and the musical presence to build a career in this business. This album comes highly recommended for anyone who likes adventurous music which isn’t afraid to pay homage to the greats of the genres they love. Excellent work, Swedes, excellent work.
