Sat, 20 Jun, 7:00 PM EDT
Scullers Jazz Club
400 Soldiers Field Road, Boston, MA 02134
Description
Greg Abate brings straight ahead, old school jazz to the Cultural Center on May 2. A powerhouse saxophonist, flutist, and composer with deep New England roots, Abate has spent decades on the bandstand worldwide, after a formative early run as lead alto in the Ray Charles Orchestra and later with the revived Artie Shaw Orchestra under Dick Johnson. Expect hard swinging bebop, lyrical ballads, and the kind of warm, story in the solo playing that’s earned praise from legends and critics alike.
Phil Woods famously said, “I sleep a lot better knowing there are alto saxophone players like Greg Abate.”
A Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame inductee and Whaling City Sound recording artist, Abate returns to a room he knows and loves for an evening of classic jazz energy, spontaneous interplay, and that unmistakable “right in the pocket” feel, perfect for longtime jazz fans and anyone who wants to hear the real thing, live.
